Opening: September 1st, 2012

Convention dates: September 5th to 8th

The World Portable Gallery Convention 2012 is an international convention on portable galleries and alternative spaces hosted by Eyelevel Gallery during the month of September. The project celebrates the variety of spaces with which curators around the globe have extended public interaction with art institutions.

With ground breaking this summer for the controversial Nova Centre, a massive $164-million convention centre to be built in downtown Halifax, there is a huge emphasis being put on the economic potentials of convening and networking.

Against such a backdrop, the World Portable Gallery Convention 2012 brings together the more Lilliputian institutions and their shades of independence, who seek other effects and affects from intimate exchanges.

From September 1st, Eyelevel Gallery will function as a taxi-stand for up to fifteen portable and alternative exhibition venues, each weaving throughout the city of Halifax, making themselves available to the public on a “by chance or appointment” basis. Information flyers will be distributed throughout Halifax, jingles will be advertised on the radio with Eyelevel Gallery’s phone number, and WPGC 2012 operators will be ready to dispatch portable galleries to viewers.

In the convention taking place September 5th to 8th, presentations, performances, panel discussions, and events will playfully punctuate the gathering of local and international “industry professionals” (with appropriate levels of tongue-in-cheek). These contributions will open up dialogues on topics surrounding scale, autonomy, mobility, intimacy, as well as transitions from alternative to established, and the pathways between DIY and entrepreneur.
