Sound Level
Including the work of six Halifax artists; Bruce Barber, Jim Drobnick, Michael Fernandes, Gord Laurin, Micah Lexier, and Richard Robertson, this exhibition relied on many different traditions associated with audio art. Bruce Barber’s “Creaky Door Rhetoric” emerges as part of an ongoing series of work in which he uses the door as a political metaphor. Lexier, Fernandes, and Drobnick all incorporated language as part of prerecorded audio tapes, which is then contextualized by specific elements of their installations. A very different approach was taken by Richard Robertson, whose works is more closely allied with a musical tradition. Abandoning electronics for live acoustic presentation Gord Laurin generates sound by utilizing moving elements.
