His paintings depict incidents from Nova Scotian history extending from colonial times to present day. The artist credits the sources of much of his imagery as coming from incidents and tales recounted in several well-known Nova Scotian books. Rendered with childlike simplicity reminiscent of folk art these images recall the experiences of communities rather than the isolated portraits of forgotten judges and generals often identified as history paintings.
