On Masculinity

"On Masculinity" was a group show curated by Wilma Needham, featuring work in a range of media including painting, collage, photography, and video. The exhibition included work by seven male artists examining their gender socializations and expectations.

The press release for this show, dated January 29 1985, states:

"Focussing on traditional symbols of male power such as the military, the artists employ personal narrative and humor to criticize a myth that both privileges and compromises them. The theme of the exhibition arises from a small but growing response by male artists to problems of being a man in a male-dominated society."
