Mr. Caldwell
Lexier takes on masculinity as his subject and has developed an installation which allows the viewer personal participation while evoking the many states and emotions of adolescence. Each work was essentially an illustrative sculpture activated by a foot pedal and animated in sound. Mr. Caldwell was an installation of wall mounted sculptures. The show took its title from the artist’s sixth grade teacher and in doing so sketched the exhibition’s themes; male role models, education, growing older, and memory. The actual imagery derives from illustrations found in dictionaries designed for school aged children. Constructed in life-size, built out of wood, aluminum, neon, thread and paint, the pieces were animated with sound, light and movement.
