Northern Archives
“I am attracted to weight and gravity and to the heaviest of materials precisely for their ability to define, to delimit, to structure, to form objects.” In “Northern Archives” Celeste Roberge will be exhibiting three new sculptures which relate to her interest in weight, the relationship of the body to the earth and the relationship of the body to consciousness. Using materials such as steel, lead, and granite, Roberge creates massive figurative forms which are immovable in relation to the earth and thought. Beaty Popescu’s sculpture combines familiar materials such as corregated cardboard as well as photo reproductions to produce work which addresses the gap between representation and the object. “In my art practice I continue to focus on the illusionistic quality of representation…In my work I move towards unhinging the represented,: says Popescu.
