Alex Livingston’s paintings are rich in art historical reference and eclecticism. They can be seen as extravagant exercises in style or understood mood pieces expressing an ascetic mysticism. His recent work embodies plant and flower forms. This work creates complex symbolic and psychological associations. The scale varies from Livingston’s usual large canvasses to smaller, more intimate images. The garden has been a focal point in Diane Gougeon’s work for several years. Whether the artist transposes her works in a timeless garden or inside a mock yuppie home, there is note of irony. She re-examines our relationship to our environment, our objects, our images and finally our rapport with materiality in general. Her sometimes humourous theatrical settings help us to mediate on our world without overdramatizing. In “landscape and objects for a garden” this theme is continued in her installation of sculptures at Eye Level Gallery.
