East/West was a series of short works in progress. The pieces attempted to present their themes in the simplest possible way, using a minimum of props and technology. It was the artist’s intention to create a show with just body and voice and a few simple props. It was a performance about the refinements of concentration and the freedom of movement such concentration affords. “The entrance walk and movements are a special kind of trance which I have been studying for the past two years with my teacher in Montreal. Based on Kripalu body training it entails entering deep meditation and releasing the mental control over the body – thus the body muscles move spontaneously without conscious direction. There is no memory or mental control in these movements; it is the body findings its own rhythm.”
