In 1884 John Merrick was a side-show in a circus in London. He was called the Elephant Man because his skull, much larger than normal, was shaped like an elephant’s skull.
In order to hide, he wore a cloak and mask. The public knew him only as a man behind a costume. The character of this costume created his identity. He never spoke to anyone.
