Sekai & Company came together in October 1977 when it’s director, Sekai, arrived from Holland to take up residency in Halifax – its reason for coming into existence was the nedd for alternatives to present growing forms of dance-theatre – working out of a youth centre, known as Odin’s Eye, the group was able to begin with relatively little financial strains. Within a few months the group, consisting of one male and six females, receiving support from Canada Council, thus enabling the continuing pursuit in bringing dance and its sphere closer to the day to day realities of many whom had no previous exposure to such bodily awareness and movement. Through the choerographic efforts of Sekai, the company explores many areas and avenues of dance concepts. “Horse Magick Horse” is a tribute in the year of the Horse – to the freedom and fetters symbolized in the world of the horse and paralleled within the minds of mankind.
