HEAT WAVES is a series of five two-week micro-residencies that are geared towards aspiring & emerging artists with an interest in community building and engagement.
Curated and developed by the Chair of Eyelevel’s Programming Committee, Maddie Alexander, HEAT WAVES emphasizes creating introductory points of entry for artists to engage with Artist Run Centres like Eyelevel.
A series of 5 artists are given 24-hour access to Eyelevel’s space which includes a studio and limited collection of art/craft supplies. This residency is not paired with a final presentation, but encourages unexpected discovery and community engagement through listed time in-studio. Eyelevel will help facilitate any community engagement activities that the Artist chooses to undertake, and provides a small production budget to each artist. This program takes a strong professional-development stance, acting as an introductory avenue to Artist Run Centres and professional presentation through light-hearted summer activities.
HEAT WAVES Emphasizes:
- Artists that have never shown at Eyelevel before
- Supporting artists that do not currently have easy access to a studio, exhibition or production space
- Proposed activities and/or practices that coincide with Eyelevel’s mandate and anti-oppression framework - no hate, no violence no discrimination
- Priority given to artists who identify as BIPOC, QPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+ and/or artists who feel unable to access professional arts organizations.
