“I am happy to have an exhibition of these paintings, almost all of which have not been exhibited before. I have tried to group them into 3 or 4 rough categories. They are my views or attitudes towards certain specific natural elements, like trees, wind, running water, clouds, sunshine; views of people like Eva, an artist model, or Rolf, a monk, or “SHE”, calm as a “Lake”; views of effort to understand things I have no control over like the drought in Africa, or the flu as it changes my “interior weather pattern”.
It is not easy for me to let a painting out of my hands. My most recent works I keep close by and continually refer to them. If they do not for one reason or another measure up to an aesthetic standard that I am continually involved with I usually put them aside to refer to in 3 to 6 months time. The paintings that I like I hang up in my house to see how they are to “live” with. Only after a period of months (possibly years) do I gain confidence that such a painting is “ready” to leave my hands. It does not mean to me that they are perfectly acceptable but it means to me they are lively enough to enrich another viewers life or moment whatever it may happen to be.
