Encampment
In Laura Vickerson’s “Encampment” she creates an installation which evokes a temporary campsite where the security and comfort of the domestic environment collides with the turbulence of nature. Camping is a familiar holiday ritual which is designed to take us away from our frenzied lives and into calm communion with nature. But Vickerson’s nature is ultimately chaotic and there can be no comfort there without elements of the domestic. Laura Vickerson presents us with humorous and disjointed images as she creates a theatrical and cartoonish campsite invaded by domestic objects. In “Encampment”, Vickerson makes effective use of installation to illustrate her interest and curiosity in the manufactured products and confused sensibilities of kitsch culture.
