13 Moons
13 Moons is a title which refers to the old astronomical calendar describing the phases of the moon. Thirteen wooden hobby horses were situated in Eye Level’s largest gallery. These sculptures referred to the lost knowledge of folk tales, magic, and astrology. Often collectively known as ‘old science’, this ‘arcane’ knowledge in many cases referred to the wealth of accumulated wisdom that was handed down from generation to generation of women. This womanly ‘power’ was resented by men, especially in the male clergy, who attempted to belittle this knowledge by referring to it as ‘evil magic’ or ‘old wives tales’. In one sense this exhibition represents the continuity of ancient women’s sensibility into the present.
