CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS TO HEAT WAVES 2022: APPLICATIONS DUE JUNE 30TH AT 11:59PM ADT 

Eyelevel is excited to be running HEAT WAVES again after such wonderful and engaging group of artists in residence last year. The residency will span from August 1st to 31st with the four successful artists in the shared studio room at 2482 Maynard Street (operated by Wonder'neath and The Blue Building Gallery). This program is specifically geared towards early emerging and aspiring artists who haven't had a chance or who have not felt welcomed in artist-run centres and contemporary arts spaces.

HEAT WAVES provides emerging artists with: 

  • Free 24-hour access to a large shared studio for the full month of August shared between three other artists. 

  • A budget of $300 for material fees 

  • Promotional support from our Summer Programming Assistant 

  • Access to Eyelevel’s Instagram Account for a one-week takeover and the opportunity to informally present your work/practice through Eyelevel’s social media platforms  

  • A 1-year membership to Eyelevel which begins at the start of your residency  

  • An optional $330 presentation fee (according to CARFAC 2022 schedule) for an artist talk/presentation 

This is meant to be a low-pressure residency. Meaning artists who apply are not expected to make finished work or hold an exhibition of any kind, but our staff will be here to help you get the word out about any shows, talks, or events that you would like to have. 

HEAT WAVES will have 4 available spots, which will all be from August 1st to 31st. 

HEAT WAVES will be “soft-juried,” we will be looking at applications with these values in mind: 

  • You have never shown at Eyelevel 

  • You can work within the timeline of August 1st to 31st 

  • You do not have easy access to a studio, gallery or production space right now and during the time of the residency  

  • Priority is given to artists who identify as BIPOC, QTBIPOC, 2SLGBTQIA+, disabled, and/or artists who currently feel unable/unwelcome to access professional arts organizations. We encourage folks to self-identify if comfortable doing so.  

Use of Eyelevel’s studio is not required in order to participate in this program. However, this year we are encouraging the artists in residence to find ways to engage with each other during their time in residence. Eyelevel also cannot provide travel or accommodations for out-of-town artists.

Our current COVID 19 protocols are that we ask folks to wear a mask in shared/common spaces. We also ask people not to eat in these shared spaces. There is a kitchen space on-site that artists may eat in.

ACCESS AND SAFETY: 

This program will take place at 2482 Maynard Street (see below for building access notes). We will use strategies such as setting up space agreements for discussions, making closed spaces, keeping conversations confidential, opening meetings with check-ins, doing follow-ups for emotional and artistic support, ensuring that volunteers and staff have received trauma first-response training, and having decompression spaces and meetings over full meals. We want to ensure that everyone interacts with each other in a supportive and empathetic way.  

2482 Maynard Street is a wheelchair-accessible building. The building has visitor parking with reserved accessible parking spots. There are push-button door openers at the main entrances, and a button-operated lift to the second floor. The building has wide hallways and all doorways are a minimum of 36" wide. 2 non-gendered washrooms (one with a changing table) are located on the first floor, and 2 non-gendered washrooms without changing tables are located on the second floor. All washrooms have sharps containers, room for a wheelchair to turn, and grab bars. A quiet room is also located on the first floor. 2482 Maynard Street is a low-scent, all-ages, low-stimuli building. The second floor is not open to the public except for special events and is normally locked with keypad entry.
