Eyelevel is seeking applications for a fun, vibrant, community-centred position: our Summer Programming Assistant. This position works closely with the Artistic Co-Directors at Eyelevel’s office and bookstore at 2482 Maynard Street, a multi-tenant art space shared with local artists, The Blue Building Gallery and Wonder’neath Art Society.

Job Description:
The Summer Programming Assistant is a 13-week, full-time contract for young/aspiring artists/arts workers to test out their skills and learn about the inner workings of artist-run centres and arts non-profits. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to make meaningful long-term contributions to a nationally reputed organization with a nearly 50-year history while developing new skills in a supported environment.
The Summer Programming Assistant will take a supported leading role in organizing and implementing HEAT WAVES, Eyelevel’s annual mini-residency program, and will take over the relaunch of AlterEye, an exhibition series developed in collaboration with community partner Alteregos. The Programming Assistant will support the mounting of summer workshops and community events alongside the Programming and Engagement committees and support the planning of fall projects.
In addition to program development, the Programming Assistant will support the Artistic Co-Directors with outreach and the upkeep of Eyelevel’s bookstore and will be responsible for managing Eyelevel’s social media presence and monthly newsletters.

Key Responsibilities Include:
- Assist with the relaunch of Altereye, including releasing a call for submissions and developing an installation/take down schedule for the participants.
- Support Eyelevel’s artists and residents with accessing resources within and outside of the organization and facilitating community relationships.
- Assisting the Artistic Co-Directors with preparations for Fall programming, including attending meetings with artists, securing venues, arranging technicians, etc.
- Manage Eyelevel’s social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram), including brainstorming new ways to promote events, developing engaging content and responding to questions in comments and DMs.
- Develop and disseminate printed promotional materials for events and Eyelevel’s general marketing needs.
- Gather images from artists and participating partners, and draft copy for Eyelevel’s website and monthly newsletters.
- Monitor a publicly-facing email account to respond to bookstore, programming and press inquiries, and communications from Eyelevel’s Board, committees and fellow staff.
- Supporting the Artistic Co-Directors with compiling press kits/drafting PSAs and press releases.
- Maintaining communication with fellow non-profits and artist-run centres, including attending summer conferences and networking events.
- Supporting the Artistic Co-Directors with maintaining the administrative back-end of Eyelevel’s membership database and bookstore.
- Assisting with the acquisition, promotion and dissemination of artist-made objects through Eyelevel’s bookstore including processing and shipping online and in-person sales.
- Sharing coverage of Bookstore open-hours with the Artistic Co-Directors.
- Assisting with the vision and development of Eyelevel’s community studios.

The Ideal Candidate
qualifies for Young Canada Works Sumer Students and has:
- Excellent organizational skills;
- Effective communication and writing skills;
- Knowledge of Halifax’s cultural community, community organizations and businesses;
- A creative and resourceful work ethic;
- Experience working in a gallery context and with community initiatives;
- The ability to work alone and in a group setting;
- Basic computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite;
- Experience working within a budget;
- Technical expertise related to computer design work and image management would be an asset;
and is:
- Adaptable, able to work evenings and weekends;
- A returning student of Fine Arts, Art History, Museum or Cultural Studies, Community Development, or with related education and experience.
