A series of portraits of women artists. “I chose to portray those artists to whom I have a personal attachment, and who have influenced my own development as an artist and a feminist,” says Koenig. An important emphasis in this work is these women’s varied role as cultural workers. Combining their art and politics, the women Koenig documents contradict stereotypical notion of the artist. Interspersed with the portraits were a range of personal narrative texts by Koenig. Because of their struggles, because of their critical positions, because they are examples of feminists taking control – I wish to document them as examples of women using their cultural skills to fight their silencing, and who fight the silencing of others through the integration of their work, politics, and daily life.
