The drawings were done over the past two years as a way of thinking about painting and reintroducing an image into painting. They are, in part, a departure from former work based on minimal or hermetic concerns. The show consists of selections from five long series of drawings most of which involve the image of the ladder. In most cases the drawing consists of two similar images, the content relying on the differences between the two images. Masking tape sealed with acrylic is used to construct many of the ladders, providing a concrete image versus a plan in each segment. One larger drawing is based primarily upon a perceptual problem of movement presented in photographic information it is necessary to move close to the drawing as a whole. It forces the eye to “track” along the image instead of seeing it as a complete unit.
