Handicap is a performance piece by Elizabeth Chitty which uses perception and personal ethics as source material and is structured with both clinical data and fictional narrative. In a departure from the artist’s usual medium of video/performance, the piece uses slide projection employed both as image and light source. Recorded and live spoken text and a commissioned song “Arbeitverbot” by Andy Paterson of the Government, comprise the audio. The title refers to the ‘handicap’ of subjectivity (the physical perception and the intellectual and emotional concern of ethics) as a general condition of the individual in personal and social contexts.
