ALTEREYE WORKS: LOWLANDS

2 – 31 Mar 2024
******

For the month of March, be sure to visit AlterEgo's Café on Gottingen Street to see Lowlands, the new exhibition from Cortney Cassidy as part of our AlterEye Café Works series. You're invited to attend the closing reception at AlterEgos (date TBA.) A reminder that all Eyelevel events and programming are masks requiredHere is a link to our access notes.

This recent painting series focuses on the materiality of paint, gender, physicality, desire and ambivalence. Experimenting with tensions of closeness and distance, clarity and obscurity, connection and disconnection and abstraction and figuration, Cassidy considers the inexpressible and confounding experiences of being in a queer and sick body.

The titles from this series of works draw from Luce Irigaray’s “When Our Lips Speak Together”, an essay that demonstrates the elusive and difficult process of using an old and oppressive language to articulate experiences that fall outside of dominant narratives.

Cortney Cassidy is an emerging painter, based in Miꞌkmaꞌki (Halifax), Canada. Their work explores ideas and experiences around gender, queerness, spirituality, fear and dreams. while contemplating the complex histories of painting, which hold many stories of dominance, oppression and exclusion. Cassidy is excited by the secret visual languages that have been developed by those left out of painting’s history. They were recently published in Sick Magazine, and have another solo exhibition at the Anna Leonowens Gallery (Halifax) from March 12 to March 16, 2024.
